Our showroom is based in Stoke Newington, North London. We have around 80-100 items (of 13,000+) on display at any one time. Viewings by appointment, give us a call before planning your visit so that the items your want to see can be there. Our opening times are 09.30-17.30 Monday-Friday. Product History

Charles E. is widely-known for his contributions to furniture design, but in his fifty-year career he made contributions in various fields; including art, set design and photography. Between 1970 and 1971, he also held the Charles Eliot Norton chair of poetry at Harvard University. Educated and trained as an architect, Eames saw everything as a problem of structure. His interest in design was formulated from problem-solving. Careful not to become associated with a ‘design movement’, Eames sought to view each design with its own particular integrity. He would start with a challenge and then educate himself to find the solution. In 1936, Eames was offered a fellowship by the distinguished architect Eliel Saarinen at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. His associates at the Academy included an all-star ensemble, including Florence Schust (later Knoll) and Harry Bertoia. The two most important encounters, however, were with Eliel Saarinen’s son Eero and Ray Kaiser, who would later become his wife. Eames and Eero Saarinen worked together on many projects throughout their respective careers. Together, they produced the winning entries in two categories of the 1940-1941Organic Design Competition, organized by the Museum of Modern Art (or MOMA) in New York. In October 1947, various industry figures gathered for a dinner in the Rainbow Room in Manhattan. At the event, concern was expressed for the minimal attention being paid to the “design and production of good, inexpensive and attractive furniture”. In response, MOMA initiated another competition, the International Competition for the Design of Low-Cost Furniture, which opened for submissions on January 5th 1948. A prize fund totalling $55,000 was allocated across three different design categories, which in 2013 would be equivalent to $533,103. Collaborating with the University of California, Los Angeles Department of Engineering, Charles E. submitted two seating ideas to the jury. The first was a ‘shell chair’ that could be fitted with a variety of legs: rocker, wood, pedestal or wire. The ‘shell structure’ of his ‘armchair’ consolidated seat, back and arms into one surface. The second submission was a single piece based on a sculpture by sculptor Gaston Lachaise. Rather predictably, it was called ‘La Chaise’. On 18th January, 1949 Eames was announced as the joint second-place winner in the seating category of the competition, for his shell chair concept. His ‘La Chaise’ chair gained an honourable mention. Selected manufacturers were then invited to discuss with the winners about putting their designs into mass production. Only after the winning entries had been retailed would they be exhibited to the public. The problem with Eames’ winning shell chair was that its seat had been created from steel; not only was steel expensive and awkward to use in manufacturing, but it was cold to touch and easily-corrodible. Eames needed to find a cheaper, friendlier material to use: fibreglass. Fibreglass was an ideal material because it was cheaper to produce, but strong. It was also a warmer material to sit on. The fibreglass chairs were manufactured; the armchair was created first and was followed by the side chair in 1950. A motivation of the Low-Cost Furniture Competition was “to produce furniture of good design that could be sold at prices within the average man’s income”. Our philosophy at Swivel UK is that good design should be accessible to the many and not just a wealthy minority. The DSW Counter Stool is available in several colours for the seat. The wooden legs and wire elements can be combined in a variety of colours, tailoring the stool to your own particular needs. This particular product has a fixed-base, but alternatively the 360 degree swivel-base is also available.
