Eero Aarnio Style
Finnish interior designer Eero Aarnio made a name for himself in the design industry with strong, aesthetically-pleasing and futuristic furniture. Born in Helsinki on 21st July 1932, he studied at the city's Institute of Industrial Arts before officially opening an office in 1962. Aarnio's designs were an important element of 1960s popular culture and were often used in the production sets of science-fiction films. He often used clean-cut, geometric forms; which were then adapted to suit the human form. The hollow Ball Chair - first presented in 1963 - took the form of a sphere in which the person could sit. The natural shape and curvature of the chair acts as a natural sound-buffer and provides a moment of solitude for the individual, even in the busiest of locations. In 1968, Aarnio presented the Bubble Chair, a variation of the Ball Chair, only this was clear and suspended from the ceiling. Both are considered to be industrial classics. Now in his eighties, Eero Aarnio continues to produce designs from his Finnish office.
